IMServ host Carbon & Energy business summit at the RSA London on 4th June

A major business carbon and energy summit taking place in London today is set to reveal research warning that UK businesses will face a £1.4billion bill for carbon credits by April 2011.
London, 4 June 2009: New research unveiled at the IMServ carbon and energy summit today revealed that UK organisations are at last buying into Government energy policy.
Latest figures show that despite the complexity of the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) initiative only 2% of UK businesses do not know whether they qualify for the scheme. This compares to figures of 20% in the public sector and 30% in the private sector a year ago. The research also revealed that only 2% of organisations are ignorant of their carbon footprint in contrast to nearly 70% last year.
More UK business energy buyers now see CRC as an opportunity rather than a stealth tax and are expressing bullish optimism regarding their ability to meet CRC challenges and elevate their future league table positions.
The summit also highlighted that the barriers and difficulties for UK businesses to successfully meet the demands of CRC still exist. BT’s Head of Climate Change and Development, Donna Young, claimed CRC should focus on energy reduction rather than carbon and be consistent across different countries.
Young also believes that the Government must revise current policy whereby commercial landlords who pay the energy bills are responsible for their tenants’ carbon footprint despite having little or no control over their energy consumption.
Steve Brown, Managing Director of IMServ, which commissioned the research, said: “We are encouraged by the figures revealed today but also understand the concerns that many UK businesses have. We are working with organisations, including BT, to overcome some of these issues. We have installed 12,500 smart meters across 6,500 BT let space to enable them and their tenants to monitor consumption and facilitate accurate billing.”
The event was hosted by IMServ, part of the Invensys Group, and marked the announcement of a radical new positioning for the company, which now offers an end-to-end carbon and energy consultancy for its clients, which include BT, the Ministry of Defence and The Arcadia Group.
